Disability Insurance

Not all disability insurance policies are created equally!

Assuming you believe that you have the need for disability insurance, the next step is to determine the type and amount of coverage you may already have through work. This is normally STD (short term disability insurance) and group LTD (long term disability insurance).

Short term disability insurance (ordinarily provides benefits for up to six months) and long term disability insurance plans are frequently offered by employers with little or no underwriting on an individual basis whereas disability income insurance requires individual underwriting.

There are major and substantial differences between short term disability insurance/group long term disability insurance plans offered at work and DI (disability income insurance) which are disability insurance policies underwritten and purchased on an individual basis. Certainly short term disability insurance and group long term disability insurance is better than no disability insurance at all, but there are situations that could leave the STD/group LTD policyholder disabled with little or no benefit.

When you review disability insurance quotes for a disability income insurance policy, you will see that the disability income insurance policy requires considerably greater outlay. This is due to the fact that the better disability income insurance policies provide far greater protection and benefits along with far more favorable definitions and guaranteed premiums than are found in short term disability insurance and group long term disability insurance plans.

While LTD premiums are typically considerably lower than DI premiums for the same or similar benefits, there are some dramatic differences
